Invent your job at Lee Wenyong & Co.
Today, because knowledge is available on every internet-connected device, what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know.
The capacity to innovate
+ the ability to solve problems creatively
+ bringing new possibilities to life
+ skills like critical thinking
+ communication
+ collaboration
is far more important than academic knowledge.
As a mentor to new hires at P&G, I learned that though we can teach new hires content, we can’t teach them how to think, or to ask the right questions, or to take the initiative.
My dear ‘ol mum & dad’s generation had it easy. They got to “find” a job.
Increasingly, however, we have to “invent” jobs.
The lucky ones will find their first job, but given the pace of change today, even they will be forced to reinvent, re-engineer & re-imagine their careers much more & more often than their parents if they want to advance in it.
So, at Lee Wenyong & Co., while every team member possesses basic HR knowledge, you will need skills & motivation even more. Motivation, hunger for creating seismic change, is most critical.
Team members who are intrinsically motivated — curious, persistent, & daring — will learn new knowledge continuously, because as traditional careers disappear, you will need to start inventing & creating your own to succeed.
Our SME best employer studies show that the longer adults work, the less motivated they become. So re-imagining the SME workplace for the 21st century is our highest priority. We need to make a positive difference to SME employees in Singapore.
Owners & managers at SME clients need to learn to become instructional leaders who create the culture of collaboration required to innovate to win in the marketplace. Owners & managers are then judged on evidence of improvement in their SME company’s results throughout the year, instead of a once-a-year performance review hastily conducted.
We need to help SME employees raise their professional development, by having them complete a planned, methodical, series of skill-based “merit badges” in areas such as on-the-job innovation.
Performance standards, not content standards, must be the focus.
